Mission Monday: Being Bold

I’m standing in a Wells Fargo Bank waiting to speak with a teller when I notice a mural on the wall. It has the iconic Wells Fargo stage coach on it and a picture of one of the California Spanish Missions with a group of children dressed in full First Communion garb. Scrolled across the top in big bold letter it reads, “Friars Mission, California” which I find a little confusing since that is not the title of any mission. Then it occurs to me, I’m on Friars Road not far from where my husband grew-up. I must have driven down this road a few thousand times and never made the connection between the road, the mission and the valley for which it is named, Mission Valley. mission Outside, mission bells mark the way along Friars Road to San Diego Mission Road and up a steep drive to the Mission Basilica San Diego de Acala. Perched on a hill the mission was relocated here from its original location at the presidio over looking San Diego Bay. (A brick cross and a robust statue of Junipero Serra still reside there just beneath the Presidio Museum.) image image Inside, the mission church looks much like the other I’ve visited. The baptismal font resides in a fenced alcove – a 16th century wood carving of St. Anne keeps watch over the replica of the baptismal font use to baptize Fr. Junipero Serra in Majorca, Spain. imageimage image Walking around this historic place – it is the first of the Alta California Missions, the first Christian baptism and burial took place here, and it is the site of the first Christian martyrdom in California – I thought how bold Fr. Serra was coming here. He stepped out in faith venturing into untamed territory putting all fear of the unknown aside. Thatis what Christ asks of each of us. And as if I were looking for confirmation of this fact, a mother that was visiting with her husband and children broke out into song. I mean loud, untamed and un-intimidated roof raising song. She was being bold for Christ. I bet her children wanted to die. I wish I had been bold enough to take her picture. Hopefully next time I will be. Have a good week and be bold for The Lord like St. Junipero and we can move mountains, build missions and bring others to Him.
